Challenge Coin features — Silk Screening

March 9th, 2010

This month we’re going to talk about silk-screening as it relates to custom coins.  Silk-screening is used for small defining lines that are too small to paint in the traditional manner.    The traditional manner of painting coins is to raise walls of metal around painted areas.  The walls of metal accomplish two things.  They contain and separate paint colors.  Walls of metal are created in one of two ways.  You either raise walls of metal around painted objects or you stamp your design into a raised area in which case the walls of metal are created for you.  Silk screening is used to color fine detail lines and it can also be used to create shapes.  Below is an example of silk-screening used to create suits on a custom poker card guard.  2 inch. Shiny Gold, with silk screen suits and epoxy - Poker Card GuardThe red and black  suits were silk-screened onto the clear coat epoxy finish and then epoxied over to protect the colors.  That particular card guard can be purchased here.

That’s it for now.  Until next time, be good to yourselves and each other.
